Preventative maintenance

Gutter & roof inspections

Your gutters and roof have one job: get water off your home and away from it. When they're blocked or damaged you usually don't notice — until it rains hard and the water ends up where it shouldn't. A regular inspection catches the small problems while they're still small and cheap to fix.

Blocked gutters do more damage than people think

When gutters can't move water away, it has to go somewhere — and it's almost always somewhere expensive:

  • Water overflows the gutters and runs down your walls, into the eaves and fascia
  • Damp, stains and mould appear in ceilings and wall cavities
  • Fascia boards, soffits and roof timbers begin to rot
  • Water pools around your footings and foundations
  • Gutters rust through and need full replacement instead of a clean-out
  • Dry leaf build-up becomes a fire risk over summer

Signs your gutters need a look

  • Water spilling over the edge of the gutters when it rains
  • Gutters sagging or pulling away from the fascia
  • Water stains or peeling paint on the eaves and fascia
  • Plants or grass growing out of the gutters
  • Mud or grit washing out of the bottom of the downpipes
  • It's been more than a year since your last check

The right timing

Before and after the wet season

Melbourne's wet months run from autumn into winter. The single best thing you can do for your home is have your gutters and roof checked twice a year — once heading into the wet season, and once coming out of it. Miss either, and the gutters slowly stop doing their job.

Before the wet season

Late summer → early autumn

Over summer, dry leaves, seed pods and grit collect in your gutters and valleys. We clear it all out and make sure water can actually flow — checking the gutters sit at the right fall, the downpipes run free, the joints are sealed and the brackets are tight. So when the heavy autumn and winter rain arrives, it drains away cleanly instead of overflowing down your walls and into the eaves.

After the wet season

End of winter → early spring

Months of rain wash leaves, twigs, mud and grit into the gutters, where it settles into a heavy, rotting sludge. We clear out everything the wet season left behind, flush the downpipes, and check for any damage the rain caused — rust, sagging, leaks and lifted flashings. Left to sit, that build-up traps moisture against your gutters and fascia and blocks the very next downpour.

Before and after the wet season — so your gutters actually do their job, all year round.

FAQs

Gutter & roof inspection questions

How often should I have my gutters inspected?

Twice a year is ideal — once before the wet season and once after. If that's not practical, a single check heading into autumn is the minimum we'd recommend.

How long does an inspection take?

Most homes take 30–60 minutes, depending on the size of the roof, the roof type and access.

Do you clean the gutters as well as inspect them?

Yes. Minor clearing we'll usually handle on the spot. For heavier build-ups we'll quote a full clean-out before we start.

Is there a call-out fee?

No — the call-out and the written quote are completely free.

What happens if you find a problem?

You get photos, a clear explanation and a fixed-price quote. There's no pressure — you decide what to do and when.

Do you only check the gutters?

No. A full inspection covers the gutters and downpipes plus the roof itself — tiles or sheets, ridge capping, valleys, flashings, and the fascia and eaves.
